Biography
Nikolaos Spilias, MD, is an Interventional and Structural Cardiologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, specializing in catheter-based, minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of coronary artery disease and heart valve disorders. He also serves as the Program Director of the Structural Heart Disease Fellowship and Associate Program Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training program.
Dr. Spilias earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Athens School of Medicine, graduating as the valedictorian of his class. After completing his military service and internship in Greece, he moved to the United States for his medical training and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine, where he received the “Golden Stethoscope Award” for his clinical skills. He then completed his fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and advanced fellowship in Interventional and Structural Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Heart, Vascular, and Thoracic Institute in Ohio, which has been ranked as the #1 hospital for heart care for 30 consecutive years. He received comprehensive training in percutaneous therapies for complex coronary and heart valve disease, including novel procedures and devices under clinical trial. During his last year of training, he served as the Chief Interventional Cardiology Fellow and received the Whitlow Award for his excellent procedural skills, named after Dr. Patrick Whitlow, a legendary figure of Interventional Cardiology.
At the University of Miami, Dr. Spilias performs a broad spectrum of complex coronary and structural heart interventions with consistently excellent patient outcomes. His work includes several regional and state milestones, notably the first renal artery denervation procedure in Florida (December 2023) and the first same-day discharge following TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) in South Florida (January 2024), among other achievements.
Dr. Spilias has performed substantial research in the field of structural heart disease especially TAVR, focusing on innovation, procedural optimization, and improvement of patient outcomes. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences. In 2021 he received the Young Author Achievement Award by the American College of Cardiology for his research work on 3D printing for patients with complex tricuspid valve disease.
Dr. Spilias aspires to provide world-class, top-quality care for patients with coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease, by using cutting-edge technology and providing the latest and most advanced procedural therapies.
