Dr. Monica Mendes’ research interests include the treatment of trauma-related disorders in youth and
families, the implementation of culturally-responsive and trauma-informed care models, as well as
foster parent recruitment, training, and retention. Dr. Mendes’ dissertation was investigating
adolescent non-suicidal’s self-injury relationship to parenting styles and caregiver strain.

Dr. Monica Mendes is a licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor at the University of
Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Mendes specializes in supporting children and families in
overcoming challenges and strengthening their relationship to one another through a multicultural
and trauma-informed framework.

Dr. Mendes completed her undergraduate degree at Boston University with a major in psychology and
minor in visual arts. She then earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in
Children and Families of Adversity and Resilience from William James College. Dr. Mendes completed
her APA accredited internship with Palm Beach County Youth Services Department, and her
postdoctoral fellowship with New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical
Center. She has also received extensive clinical training working with at-risk youth in acute care
settings as a clinical fellow with Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Health Alliance and at the
University of Massachusetts’ Chan Medical School’s Adolescent Continuing Care Unit.

Dr. Mendes has developed trainings and presented on topics such as developmental trauma, suicide
prevention, art therapy, psychology and social justice advocacy, and mental health public policy for
both mental health professionals and local community members.
