Biography

 

Dr. Micheal Raad is a spine surgeon serving as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Director of the Spine Research Program, where he leads pioneering efforts to advance spinal care and improve patient outcomes.

 

Dr. Raad completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he also completed a subsequent fellowship in complex spinal surgery. In 2023, he was honored with the Frank Miller Coulson Award for Clinical Excellence at Johns Hopkins, recognizing his dedication to delivering the highest standard of patient care. That same year, he was named to the prestigious North American Spine Society’s 20 Under 40 list, celebrating his leadership and contributions to the field.

 

A prolific researcher, Dr. Raad’s work has reshaped modern spinal surgery practices and devised educational videos for multiple techniques including endoscopic spinal surgery. His landmark 2017 study on opioid use after spinal surgery—awarded Best Research Paper at the North American Spine Society Meeting (NASS)—fundamentally influenced perioperative pain management guidelines still in use today. His more recent accolades include the 2024 NASS Best Research Paper Award for national work on neurologic outcomes after deformity surgery, and the 2024 Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation Presenter’s Choice Award for a novel classification system predicting adjacent segment failure after fusion surgery.

 

Clinically, Dr. Raad specializes in complex spinal deformity and revision surgery, scoliosis surgery, ultra-minimally invasive endoscopic spinal procedures, and motion-preserving techniques such as disc replacement and laminoplasty.

 

He is an active member of multiple professional societies, including the North American Spine Society, the Scoliosis Research Society, the Cervical Spine Research Society, and the Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.

 

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Raad is a devoted husband and father. He and his wife, a fellow physician, are raising their young son in South Florida, where they enjoy traveling, biking, and cooking together as a family.

Research Interests

 

Dr Raad is a prolific researcher and his work has focused on improving outcomes after spinal surgery by identifying new risk factors for failures and describing new techniques to circumvent them such as improving the screw-endplate angle, improving bone health prior to spinal surgery and others. Dr Raad has also published many technique articles describing how to perform complex procedures such as endoscopic spinal decompression and three-column osteotomies. He has received numerous national and international awards for his research.
