Dr. Pongas is a board-certified hematologist and oncologist with extensive clinical experience in both indolent and aggressive lymphomas. His research interests span clinical and laboratory-based investigations, with a focus on understanding disease biology and therapeutic resistance.
He collaborates with the Lymphoma Epidemiology Outcomes (LEO) group and is an active member of the Waldenström Macroglobulinemia Network (WM-NET). In the laboratory, Dr. Pongas employs genetically engineered cell lines to study oncogenic mechanisms associated with recurrent mutations in Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) and Waldenström Macroglobulinemia (WM). His work is particularly focused on unraveling mechanisms of resistance to molecularly targeted therapies and immunotherapies, with the goal of informing new treatment strategies.
Previously, at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Dr. Pongas contributed to the characterization of a novel feedback loop downstream of the B-cell receptor in Activated B-cell–like DLBCL (ABC-DLBCL). His studies identified cross-talk between the PI3Kα and PI3Kδ isoforms, uncovering a druggable vulnerability through combined inhibition.
