His clinical focus includes aortic root, aortic ross, and arch surgery, including valve-sparing operations, and frozen elephant trunk (FET) procedures. He has advanced experience in aortic valve repair and replacement using open, minimally invasive, and percutaneous approaches, as well as mitral valve surgery and the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. Dr. Amodio’s practice also encompasses reoperative cardiac surgery, management of connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, aortic-related congenital conditions, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and surgical treatment of cardiovascular tumors.

Biography

Dr. Ciro Amodio is an adult cardiac surgeon and Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Miami. Trained in Italy and further refined through advanced fellowships in Europe and the United States, he brings a strong international perspective to cardiac innovation and multidisciplinary care.

Dr. Amodio earned his medical degree from the University of Federico II in Naples, Italy. He completed residency training in cardiac surgery at Sant’Orsola Hospital in Bologna and at St. Antonius Ziekenhuis in the Netherlands, gaining extensive experience in aortic and valve surgery. He subsequently pursued advanced fellowship training in aortic and adult congenital cardiac surgery at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts Heart Centre) in London, United Kingdom. Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr. Amodio served as a Clinical Associate in Aortic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, focusing on advanced aortic interventions and perioperative management strategies under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Roselli.

An active academic surgeon, Dr. Amodio has authored and co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Vascular Surgery, and the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, and has contributed book chapters on advanced aortic surgery. His research focuses on improving outcomes in acute and chronic aortic dissection, refining frozen elephant trunk techniques, and advancing myocardial and organ protection strategies in complex operations. He has presented his work at major international meetings, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), and the International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support (ISMCS).

In his academic role, Dr. Amodio is dedicated to surgical education, mentoring trainees, and contributing to the advancement of cardiovascular surgery through teaching and clinical scholarship. He serves as a reviewer for several high-impact journals in the field and has held leadership roles during his training and career, including appointments at Sant’Orsola Hospital in Bologna and Barts Heart Centre in London. In recognition of his academic and clinical contributions, he received the 2025 Carlson–Mouly Award from the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
