Biography

Arturo J. Rios-Diaz, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon at the University of Miami Health System.

Dr. Rios-Diaz earned his medical degree at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Luis Razetti School of Medicine. He completed a research fellowship in health services and outcomes at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and a certificate in applied biostatistics at Harvard School of Public Health. He went on to complete 6 years of general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he received multiple awards for technical excellence, teaching, and research. His surgical training was followed by 3 years of a plastic surgery independent residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the nation’s top microsurgery and breast reconstruction programs. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and board-eligible by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Rios-Diaz, a breast reconstruction specialist, offers implant-based and advanced microsurgical techniques that utilize patients’ own tissue, such as DIEP, muscle-sparing TRAM, PAP, and TUG flap procedures. He also provides aesthetic surgery services for the face, breast, and body, including fat grafting, Mohs reconstruction, abdominal wall and hernia reconstruction, scar revision, and non-surgical facial rejuvenation with injectables. Additionally, Dr. Rios-Diaz is currently exploring robotic-assisted techniques in reconstructive surgery. 

Dr. Rios-Diaz’s research centers on advancing outcomes in breast reconstruction and abdominal wall reconstruction, combining clinical innovation with patient-reported outcomes and population-level health services research. He integrates advanced methodologies, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to better understand and improve recovery, function, and long-term results for patients. His academic contributions include more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and over 160 presentations at national and international conferences, and he actively serves as a reviewer for multiple leading surgical journals.

He strives to make each patient feel informed, comfortable, and confident throughout their surgical journey, while pursuing innovative approaches that optimize both function and natural aesthetic results.

    I love Dr Rios Díaz. He deserves recognition for all he does with his patients. He sat down with me and my husband multiple times to explain the different surgery options, issues with insurance approvals, etc. He treats his patients like human being and not another number. I am truly saddened that he is leaving this hospital.
