Biography

Dr. Alex H. Velasquez is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a board‑certified cardiologist specializing in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. He earned his medical degree from the University of Miami and completed his Internal Medicine residency and Cardiovascular Disease fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he also served as Chief Resident and Chief Cardiology Fellow. He returned to Florida to complete advanced fellowship training in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and joined the UM faculty in 2017.

Dr. Velasquez focuses on the diagnosis and management of complex cardiac arrhythmias, with expertise in catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardias, and ventricular arrhythmias. He performs physiologic and leadless pacing, as well as implantation of cardiac defibrillators—including subcutaneous and extravascular systems designed to minimize lead‑related complications. His clinical approach emphasizes evidence‑based, patient‑centered care and the integration of advanced electrophysiologic technologies to improve outcomes for patients with rhythm disorders.

In April 2025, Dr. Velasquez was appointed Interim Program Director of the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship, where he leads postgraduate training, curriculum development, and mentorship for fellows specializing in cardiovascular medicine. He remains active in academic scholarship, with peer‑reviewed publications and national presentations on sudden cardiac death risk stratification, conduction disturbances after transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and mechanisms and management of atrial fibrillation. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society.

Dr. Velasquez is also committed to community engagement, serving as a preceptor for the Department of Community Service at the Miller School of Medicine and participating in outreach initiatives such as the San Juan Bosco Clinic and Miami Mission.
