Research Profile
Alan Alper Sag, MD, FSIR is a nationally-recognized IR researcher with over 70 publications and over thirty invited speakerships including Grand Rounds, Visiting Professor, and National Conferences.
His research encompasses interventional procedures for musculoskeletal and oncologic pain, with particular emphasis on vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, sacroplasty, bone tumor ablation, nerve ablation including geniculate nerve ablation, pain management for cancer pain and non-cancer pain, and thyroid interventions such as radiofrequency ablation and embolization.
His work highlights the technical and clinical aspects of vertebral augmentation (vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, sacroplasty) for osteoporotic and malignant compression fractures, supporting their efficacy in pain reduction and functional improvement as endorsed by the Society of Interventional Radiology, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and related societies. Dr. Sag has contributed to the literature on bone tumor ablation, including radiofrequency and cryoablation, often combined with cementoplasty, demonstrating significant pain relief and improved quality of life in patients with spinal metastases, in line with recommendations from the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
His research on nerve ablation, including geniculate nerve ablation, addresses minimally invasive strategies for refractory joint and cancer pain, integrating advanced imaging guidance and neurolytic techniques.
In thyroid interventions, Sag has described the use of radiofrequency ablation and embolization for benign and malignant thyroid nodules, focusing on procedural safety and efficacy. Across these domains, Sag’s work is characterized by a commitment to evidence-based, image-guided interventions that expand therapeutic options for complex pain syndromes and tumor-related pain and fractures.
